The story and the screenplay was based on a true case of a young woman, Linda Agostini, who was found in a culvert in distinctive Chinese style pyjamas – she had been badly beaten and shot in the head. This was in 1934, at the height of the Great Depression, and her identity was unknown so the police put the body in a bath of formalin to preserve it. There it lay for over 10 years until dental records revealed that the unknown "Pyjama Girl" was Linda Agostini.
