Description: New York, Harper & Brothers, 1888. Leather. 916p. Ex-library. An oversize hardcover book with black leather spine and corners and marbled boards. FAIR condition. Bottom quarter of the spine is tearing off, weakening the boards (though they are still attached). Edges and surfaces of cover are heavily chafed. There is an old sticker on the spine with a handwritten number 21. A few old library markings and occasional newsprint smudges inside, and small pencil marks on last page of each issue. Closed tears in pages 29, 45, and 303. Light, spotty stains on page 668 and staining in gutter of pages 914-915. Otherwise, text unmarked, and pages securely attached, despite compromised exterior. Volume 21 of the ladies' fashion magazine HARPER'S BAZAR (later spelled HARPER'S BAZAAR), containing all weekly issues from January 7 through December 29, 1888. Filled with lots of excellent black and white engravings of women's fashions, hairstyles, and more. Features a 2-page spread depicting a who's who of distinguished Englishmen assembled for the Jubilee of Queen Victoria; a lavishly illustrated article on a version of the Cinderella fairy tale from ancient Egypt; a full-page illustration by Hermann Prell of Judas Iscariot receiving his 30 pieces of silver; a 2-page spread commemorating the life of Kaiser Wilhelm I, who died in March 1888; an obituary for Louisa May Alcott; a 2-page portrait of the Prince of Wales (future Edward VII) and his family; a 2-page illustration of Christ appearing to Mary Magdalene after the Resurrection; a collage of portraits of prominent English authors of the Victorian age; a full-page engraving of a portrait of Philip IV of Spain by Velazquez; and an impressive 2-page illustration of the German imperial family during the brief reign of Friedrich III.
