Corners worn through, and some leather smudges on the cloth. A few library stamps inside, and occasional small closed tears on the page edges. LACKS THE AUGUST 21 ISSUE. The folding plate facing page 345 is torn in the middle. Closed tear on edge of folding plate facing page 417. Top corner torn off page 575-576. Plate facing page 617 is splitting along the folds, and page 617 is coming loose. A folding color plate in the Christmas issue is badly torn and has been repaired with tape. It appears that a few pages at the end of the Christmas issue are missing. Other than page 617, the binding is tight. Text is unmarked. Volume 77 of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, with issues spanning July 3 through December 25, 1880 (though lacking the Aug. 21 issue). Contains reporting on the arrest of Liberal MP and avowed atheist Charles Bradlaugh for attempting to serve in the House of Commons without taking a Christian oath; coverage of the Second Anglo-Afghan War; a deadly mining explosion at Seaham Colliery; a landslip (landslide) in Nainital, India; unrest in Montenegro; reviews of WASHINGTON SQUARE by Henry James, then being published serially in CORNHILL magazine; the Prince of Wales' hunting excursion in Scotland; and the 1880 United States presidential election. Among the many fine engravings are a foldout of Carlisle Cathedral; the launch of the Russian imperial yacht Livadia; a 2-page spread depicting the Battle of Blenheim (from the War of Spanish Succession); and a fine portrait of president-elect James Garfield.
