 - The Illustrated London News, Volume XXXV: September-December 1859

Title: The Illustrated London News, Volume XXXV: September-December 1859
Description: London, George C. Leighton, 1859. Hardcover. Ex-library. An oversize hardcover book with a black cloth spine, leather corners, and green cloth boards. The title page states that this volume contains issues from July through December, but in fact, the issues start at September 24; does NOT contain any issues from July or August. Corners heavily scuffed, exposing the underlying cardboard. Occasional library stamps inside, as well as some spotty stains (most visibly on front page of October 1 issue). Bottom corner torn of page 331-332, and bottom on page 541-542, neither affecting the text. Small closed tear in page 559-560. The binding, though slightly shaken, is sturdy enough for normal handling. Volume 35 of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, with issues spanning September 24 through December 31, 1859 (including the Christmas supplement). Includes reporting on some findings pertaining to the ill-fated Arctic expedition of Sir John Franklin; commentary on the aftermath of the Second Italian War of Independence; the "Pig War" between Britain and the United States over a boundary dispute in San Juan; and the Spanish-Moroccan War. Among the many fine engravings are depictions of a visit by Queen Victoria to North Wales; a portrait of Fabre Geffrard, President of Haiti; an excellent view of the United States capitol building; and the Rock of Gibraltar. There is also a two-page spread in full color, depicting English fox-hunting. Measures approx. 16.5" x 11.75.
