Description: London, George C. Leighton, 1868. Hardcover. Ex-library. A large hardcover book with a black cloth spine, leather corners, and green cloth boards. Corners heavily rubbed and some lighter rub marks across the boards. A few spotty stains at bottom of front cover. The gutter of the title page has been repaired with clear tape. A few old library markings inside. LACKS pages 65-76 (the last several pages of the Jan. 18 issue). The two color foldouts are badly cracked and torn. Occasional light smudges, but otherwise, text clean and binding tight enough for normal handling. Volume 52 of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, with weekly issues spanning January 4 through June 27, 1868. Contains reporting on the impeachment of U.S. President Andrew Johnson; the British military expedition to Abyssinia; the ongoing search for Dr. David Livingstone in Africa; a visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to Ireland; and the birth of Tsar Nicholas II. Among the many fine engravings are a full-page depiction of Mt. Vesuvius erupting; the Austrian frigate Novara transporting the body of Maximilian I of Mexico back to Vienna for burial; an elephant procession at Lucknow; and a map showing the route of British forces in Abyssinia. Measures approx. 16" x 11.75.
