A color plate of Irish Setters has stuck to the facing page (page 284), leaving some residue after being peeled back off. Closed tear in page 525. Small hole in one of the color plates following page 548. Pages securely attached despite damaged hinges. Volume 65 of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, containing issues from July 4 through December 26, 1874, along with the 32-page Christmas edition of December 16. Includes reporting on the Spanish Civil War, a column on page 151 explaining the game of baseball (which was new to England at the time), and a visit to Iceland by King Christian IX of Denmark. Among the many fine engravings are a depiction of the Boston Red Stockings and Athletic Club of Philadelphia playing baseball at Prince's Garden, Brompton; a portrait of the crucified Christ; a portrait of Empress Maria Alexandrovna of Russia; and a two-page spread of the Battle of Trafalgar. Measures approx. 16" x 12.
