RARE FIRST GOREY EDITION OF BLEAK HOUSE - Octavo, 8-1/2 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. Hardcover, bound in tan cloth backed with a black cloth spine, titled in white on the spine, in the rare pictorial dust wrapper with black, white & golden yellow illustrations by Edward Gorey on the front panel and on the spine. The dust jacket's spine is slightly darkened. The jacket is slightly soiled with a short tear to the bottom of it's rear panel and a chip out from the head of the spine. (xxvii), [1] & 593 pages, with 79 black & white illustrations including a frontispiece by Edward Gorey. Very good. The exceedingly rare FIRST CENTENNIAL EDITION ILLUSTRATED BY EDWARD GOREY. [Toledano B-4a]. With all of the first edition points: The "First Centennial Edition" stated on the copyright page, the $5.00 price on the dust wrapper front flap, the word "Doubleday" at the foot of the book's spine, and with the 13 page Introduction by Donal Friede. The publisher's statement "Arranged for Modern Reading" indicates that the novel is abridged. Very good .
