The bottom corners of the title label are lightly worn and a Dewey decimal number is penned under the label on the spine. viii, [iv] & 143 pages, with a title page illustration, 5 full-page plates preceding each chapter and 10 full-page woodcuts of herbs by John Howard Benson. Very good. First edition. Signed by the author Henry Beston on the front endpaper. Deacquisitioned by the Onteora Club Library with a dewey decimal number penned on the spine, the library's stamp on the front and rear endpapers and half-title, together with a label listing the library's rules mounted on the front pastedown and check-out label at the rear. The Onteora Club was founded in 1887 by Francis Thurber and his sister Candace Wheeler, who was significant in the American Arts and Crafts movement and partner of Louis C. Tiffany. Within its first few years the club, located in Tannersville, NY, grew to include a church, residences and a library. Frequent guests of Candace, her brother Francis and of the Club consisted of important authors, artists and philosophers including Mark Twain, Mary Mapes Dodge, as well as the sisters Kate Douglas Wiggin and Nora Archibald Smith.
