Description: Philadelphia: (United States Christian Commission), February, 1863. 1863. - Octavo, 9-1/4 inches high by 5-7/8 inches wide. Softcover, printed buff wraps titled with a vignette of the American flag & a Bible on the front cover. The book lacks the rear cover and the spine has largely perished. The edges of the soiled front cover are chipped and an early owner's name is penciled at the top. 128 pages. The corners of the pages are bumped and several are creased. There is a small stain to the bottom edge of several pages. A complete copy of this rare pamphlet. Following the First Battle of Bull Run, the National Committee of the YMCA called a convention which met in New York City on November 14, 1861. The YMCA, together with Protestant ministers, created the United States Christian Commission to furnish supplies, medical services and care, and religious publications to Union Troops during the Civil War. Non-combatants members also assisted Chaplains who were overwhelmed by the scope of the war. Members such as John Calhoun Chamberlain, served with the USCC during the Battle of Gettysburg. Calhoun himself kept a diary describing the commission's activities during the battle. Although initially hesitant to include women, an auxiliary Ladies Christian Commission was created in 1864 with women serving in field hospitals and kitchens. The American novelist Louisa May Alcott was among many women who served with The Ladies Christian Commission. Another, Sarah Emma Edmonds, not only served as a male nurse, hiding her gender under the name "Franklin Thompson" but also served as a soldier and spy for the Union Army. Fair .
