Field, Eugene. - Little Willie.

Title: Little Willie.
Description: Printed at the end of the text is the date: October 19, 1895. 1895. - Oblong 12mo, 4-1/4"x5-3/4". Printed stapled self-wraps with the title on the front & a vignette of Willie seated backward on a rocking chair printed on the rear wrapper. 8 pages, including the wraps, with the text printed in black and decorated initials in salmon. There is a tiny tear to the leaves at the top and some minor soiling. Very good. Field's verse about his little boy Willie who "Cuddled close beside me when / He used to wet the bed". A charming note on the last page states that: "Field said his wife took the boy away on a visit, and he found, in their absence, he couldn't sleep till he got up and poured hot water on his shirt." This is one of 2 editions noted by the BAL as possibly being a first or second edition of this classic "The first formal and authorized publication of this poem, so far as BAL had been able to determine, is in Slason Thompson's Life of Eugene Field, New York, 1927, pp. 159-160, where it appears with the following statement: It has never before appeared between the covers of a book regularly published, although thousands of copies have been printed and circulated sub rosa..Thompson appears not to exaggerate when he states that 'thousands of copies have been printed and circulated.' Out of this mass the following printings have some claim to recognition. The order as given is wholly arbitrary." [BAL 5769]. RARE. Very good .
