Good. From the library of Josiah Hooker, Chairman of the School Committee, with his name and title embossed in gilt beneath the title on the front cover. The Chairman of the School Committee, the Springfield lawyer and Justice of the Peace, Josiah Hooker (1796-1870) served as a member of the Massachusetts Legislature, President of the Springfield Savings Bank, and was also clerk and treasurer of the Bridge Company for 40 years. Prior to the Civil War, Springfield, Massachusetts was divided into 12 school districts, each responsible for taxing residents and all other phases of education. With their focus on lowering taxes instead of education, these school districts proved inefficient. In the late 1860s, Josiah Hooker led a large scale reform of the city's public schools resulting in establishing a new high school and six new grammar schools. All but the Indian Orchard School were located near the city's downtown. The latter was located at the corner of Myrtle and Worcester Streets in the far Northeastern corner of the city in order to serve the factory village of Indian Orchard. Good .
