Penned for the "350,000 Americans who visit Paris every year" Therese and Louise Bonney explain in the foreword to "A Shopping Guide to Paris" that "Dozens of books have been written telling you what to see .. Now, we are writing to tell you where to buy, knowing from our experience of more than a few years - close experience with Paris and visitors - that buying is of as much importance as sightseeing in this enchanting city." As per Elizabeth Broman's "Unbound" article in the Smithsonian, "An Informed Consumer..Shopping with Therese Bonney in Paris": "An American woman shopping for Paris fashions might have felt overwhelmed by the many small boutiques and fashion houses. Therese and Louise Bonney outlined in great detail the procedure and etiquette of visiting couturiers and buying dresses and coats, as well as separate boutiques for hats, gloves, leather goods, and other accessories.. Advice on who the top name fashion houses were, the chapters devoted to fashion and accessories, furnishings for interiors (emphasis on modern), where to eat, buy antiques, and the different department stores were written to help the reader save time and get the best values. There is much more to shopping in the French capital than merely walking in.. Shopping in Paris is an art and must be approached with a certain finesse. The chapter on Modern Decorators is an especially important and revealing insight into modernity. She photographed a wide variety of subjects- private homes, the interior and exteriors of many artists and designer's studios.." Born in Syracuse, New York, the American photographer and publicist Therese Bonney (1894-1978) was best known for her World War II photographs taken on the Russian-Finnish front. Educated at the University of California, Berkeley and Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Therese Bonney settled in Paris where she continued her studies at the Sorbonne. The first American to receive a scholarship from that prestigious French educational institution, she went on to document the French decorative arts, gathering photographs from many sources. Following over a decade's work as a publicist, she took up photography to become a photojournalist. Her photographs of the ravages of war and civilians on the Russian-Finnish front earned her the medal for bravery of Order of the White Rose of Finland. Her war photographs of European children in dire conditions were shown at The Museum of Modern Art in 1940 and were subsequently published in her book "Europe's Children" in 1943. Bonney served with the French Red Cross, the Croix-Rouge, and was the recipient of the French Croix de guerre and the Legion d'honneur. Good .
