Description: 1868. 1868. - Hugh Cairns, 1st Earl Cairns' signature at the bottom left of a 3 inch high by 4-1/4 inch wide clipping from an envelope. "London Official Paid" is stamped in red at top right above Miss Nicholson's address penned in an unknown hand. The autograph is mounted with glue from the verso onto a larger sheet of heavier stock clipped from an album. Very good. The Irish-born British statesman Hugh McCalmont Cairns, 1st Earl of Cairns (1819-1885) was a prominent Conservative statesman in the House of Lords. He served as Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain under Benjamin Disraeli. Cairns was the 17th Chancellor of the University of Dublin, serving in that position from 1867 to 1885. Very good .
