Title: Original Wood Engraving by J. Andrew Entitled "Bayonet Drill of the Independent Cadets, Under Command of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas C. Amory, on Boston Common, May 30.
Description: (1855). (1855). - A 9 inch high by 12-3/4 inch wide wood engraving by John Andrew illustrating groups of cadets engaged in bayonet drills on Boston Common. The image depicts several clusters, each of three cadets standing back to back with bayonets affixed to the ends of rifles, held out like lances. Others stride forth from rows of cadets in parade formation observing the drills. Mounted Cavalry are depicted in formation behind the lines. Three cadets are shown in the foreground striding forth from the left. Clouds and woods serve as background to the image. The engraver's name "J. Andrew" is printed within the image at bottom right. The print is mounted with glue from the verso onto 10-3/4 inch high by 14-1/4 inch wide stiff cream paper. Folded in the middle with small pieces out from the top corners which do not affect the engraving. The print is slightly soiled. Good. The print appeared in Ballou's Pictorial, Volume 9, July 14, 1855. Good .
