Description: Los Angeles, California, May 28th, 1930. 1930. - A densely typed document on 13-1/2 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of watermarked yellow legal paper. The date of the agreement is penned in ink within the first line of the contract above "Henry Cowell / Menlo Park, California" typed in capital letters in blue ink. A few lines down, the title of the composition "'The Banshee' /Piano Solo" is similarly typed in blue. A few lines have been crossed out by "x" and the percentage to be paid to Cowell typed in where called for. Signed in ink by Henry Cowell and W.A. Quincke at bottom, the contract is additionally signed by an unidentified witness as well as by a notary who has embossed his blind seal at bottom left. Folded with some minor creases to the edges and a tiny chip at bottom. Very good. Henry Cowell's "The Banshee" was the first piano composition to be performed exclusively by manually manipulating the piano's strings inside the instrument, entirely by-passing the keyboard. Within the score, Cowell outlined 12 different methods of manipulating the strings, including scraping the strings with one's fingernails, making use of the flat of the hand, etc. The American composer Henry Cowell (1897-1965) was strongly influenced by Oriental music as well as Irish and Midwestern folk tunes.
