Title: Typed Letter with an Autograph Postscript to the Editor in Chief of "American Artist" Magazine Ernest Watson Signed by Polish-American Artist Frederic Taubes.
Description: May 13, 1953. 1953. - Three closely typed paragraphs filling half a sheet of 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide note paper with a 24-word P.S. penciled at bottom left. Signed "Fred". Taubes' name is penciled in another hand at top & bottom right. Folded twice for mailing. A narrow strip along the top edge of the paper is darkened. Very good. Taubes is sending Ernest Watson some replacement artwork [not here present] which he feels better represents "the pictures looked upon as 'best' by the smart estheticians..After ten years of service to our readers I am now well qualified to judge what they appreciate best, and to give them the best as I see it has been always foremost in my mind." In the third paragraph he writes about the new pamphlet "Reality" published by realist painter Raphael Soyer, which he describes as an imitation of "The Taubes Page", his own regular column in "American Artist." Taubes, who was known for his championing of the craft techniques of the old masters, writes that Soyer once invited him to join his group, "many of them ex-darlings of the Museum of Modern Art". "Of course I declined..I believe that the credit of having started a systematic and relentless fight should be given me first. I am not anxious to share it with my colleagues." Born in Lwow, Poland, Frederic Taubes [1900-1981] settled in America during the Depression and became highly successful, both as a society portrait painter and as the writer of authoritative books on art. Ernest Watson was the co-founder of Watson-Guptill Publications as well as editor in chief of "American Artist" magazine. Very good .
