Cowell, Henry (1897-1965). Pioneering American Composer. - Autograph Letter Signed by the American Composer Henry Cowell, Correcting an Error in the Numbering of His Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 18.

Title: Autograph Letter Signed by the American Composer Henry Cowell, Correcting an Error in the Numbering of His Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 18.
Description: New York, January 4, 1965. 1965. - Over 40 words penned in blue ink on 4 inch high by 6 inch wide cream paper. In his note, apparently addressed to a music publisher, the pioneering modern American composer Henry Cowell expresses his concerns that an error was made in numbering his "Hymn and Fuguing #18": "A mistake was made in numbering my duet for two saxophones (of which you have the masters)". Cowell then asks: "could you please informally scratch out 17 and put in 18 instead?" and concludes with his "Hearty Greetings". Signed "Henry Cowell". Folded for mailing with the date of receipt "Jan 6 1965" stamped in red at the top and minor staining from a paper clip to the top left. Very good. The work to which Cowell refers is his "Hymn and Fuguing Tume No. 18 for Soprano Saxophone and Contrabass Saxophone". The error most probably occurred because Hymn an Fuguing Tune No. 17 was deliberately left unnumbered. It was titled "Gravely and Vigorously", for solo cello, and was composed in response to President Kennedy's assassination. The American composer Henry Cowell (1897-1965) was strongly influenced by Oriental music as well as Irish and Midwestern folk tunes. Exploring the music of Africa, Java, and India, he revolutionized American music with innovations such as tone clusters and directly plucking the piano's strings. Very good .
