The Gothic novel "Die Elixiere des Teufels" [The Devil's Elixir], published in German in 1815, was Hoffmann's first attempt at writing a novel. He was inspired to write it by a visit to a Capuchin monastery in Bamberg. This Dutch translation is by Johan van der Woude, who also writes an introduction. The striking illustrations are by Eppo Doeve [1907-1981], a popular Dutch painter and cartoonist who was born in Bandung, Indonesia and moved to the Netherlands in 1927.
This translation is a title in the series "De Onsterfelijken" [The Immortals], characterized as "masterworks of world literature".
