Critic, editor and author Malcolm Cowley helped institute the Viking Portable Library series in the 1940s. This collection includes passages from his memoirs of the Lost Generation, "Exile's Return" and "The Dream of the Golden Mountains"; critical essays on Hawthorne, Whitman, Fitzgerald, Hart Crane and Thomas Wolfe; more than twenty poems from "Blue Juniata"; and selected correspondence from Cowley to Hemingway, William Faulkner, Edmund Wilson and others.
