Setting out to mark the hundredth anniversary of Scribner's, the publishers concluded that "The story of bookmaking is most accurately recorded in the interchange of letters between author and publisher, and fortunately the letters of this house are practically complete since its earliest days." Roger Burlingame, whose father was the editor of Scribner's Magazine and who had himself served on the company's editorial board, was called upon to sift and interpret this mass of correspondence. Very good .
