Title: When I Grow Up by W.W. Denslow". [W.W. Denslow's "When I Grow Up" As First Serialized in 2 Volumes of "St. Nicholas: An Illustrated Magazine for Young Folks" from November 1908 Through October 1909]. (2 Volumes).
Description: New York: The Century Co. / London: Frederick Warne & Co. 1908 to 1909. [1909]. [1909]. - Quarto, 9-3/4 inches high by 7-1/2 inches wide. Two volumes uniformly bound in red cloth elaborately titled and illustrated in gilt and black on the front covers and the spines. The head and tail of the spines are very lightly bumped with minor rubbing to the corners of the covers. Pages [i]-viii & [1]-576 pages; and [i]-viii & [577]-1152, respectively. Illustrated with 24 full-page color plates and 4 full-page monochrome plates by W.W. Denslow. Each of the fourteen occupations which a child could aspire to when he or she grows up is represented by 4 pages, including the text of Denslow's playful humorous poems and two full page illustrations by him. The set is further illustrated with profuse black & white illustrations throughout, including many full-page. Pages 281 though 288 are misbound after page 264. The corner of page 1021 is creased and there are minor stains to pages 1100-1101. The vignette of a cat illustrating Charles F. Lester's "The Land of Thus -And-So" (page 1118) has been tastefully hand-colored. The bindings are slightly shaken. A very attractive set.

The two volumes of the periodical consist of "Volume XXXVI, Part I -November, 1908, to April, 1909", and "Volume XXXVI, Part II - May to October, 1909".

Here, appearing for the first time, are the first 14 occupations, represented in rhymes and illustrated by Denslow, which were subsequently reproduced in the book of the same title published in 1909.

The fourteen occupations consist of: "The Autoist", "The Pirate", "The Clown", "The Knight", "The Cowboy", "The Actor", "The Fireman", "The Hunter", "The Orator", "The Drum-Major", "The Soldier", "The Policeman", "The Baseball Player", and "The Sailor".

In the bibliography included in "W.W. Denslow" by Douglas G. Greene and Michael Patrick Hearn the authors describe the book, "Illustrated in color and black and white by Denslow. The book contains poems and pictures which first appeared in St. Nicholas magazine, November, 1908, through October, 1909, with ten additional episodes which had not previously been published." [Greene & Hearn 44]. Very good .
