This volume includes some of the 16 year old Victor Hugo's earliest published works among which are first appearances of 3 of his poems in the 1819 issue: "Ode sur le Retablissement de la Statue de Henri IV, Qui a remporte le Prix du Lis d'or propose par L'Academie" (here published on pages i though v), "Les Vierges de Verdun, Ode qui a obtenu une Amaranthe reservee" (here published on pages vi to xi), and "Les Derniers Bardes, Poeme qui a concouru pour le Prix" (here published on pages xxxv to xvii). Two of his older brother Eugene Hugo's early poems here appear in the 1818 and 1819 issues. Eugene's "La Mort du Duc d'Enghien, Ode, qui a obtenu un souci reserve" (here published on pages 1 to vi of the 1818 issue), and "Ode sur la Mort de S.A.S. Louis-Joseph de Bourbon, Prince de Conde, qui a concouru pour le Prix" (here published on pages xx to xxii of the 1819 issue).

It is interesting to note that Eugene Hugo's poem "La Mort du Duc d'Enghien" is correctly identified at the head of the poem but is erroneously attributed to Victor Hugo in the table of contents, a fact that has led to occasional bibliographic confusion. Victor's brother, Eugene Hugo (1800-1837) suffered from schizophrenia. He was interned at the Charenton asylum in 1822.

The ancestor of l'Academie Francaise, l'Academie des Jeux Floraux de Toulouse is one of the oldest European literary societies. Over a period of several hundred years dating back to 1323, the society awarded yearly literary prizes to promote cultural excellence.

The Academie des Jeux Floraux's prize winning poems were published each year. Victor Hugo's contributions which were published in 1819, along with a few others which won prizes in subsequent years, served to convince his father of his serious literary talent and conviction as opposed to his unenthusiastic studies of law.
