The author of this biography, Elias Ahira Calkins [1828-1904], was a newspaper editor and publisher and a veteran of the Civil War who was mustered out with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Calkins began his career in Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin, becoming an editorial writer and newspaper publisher. When the war broke out he organized the Third Wisconsin cavalry and saw service in Missouri and Arkansas. He won praise for his conduct at Prairie Grove, Ark. and Rocky Bluff, Mo. in 1862. After the war he resumed his career as an editorial writer and newspaper editor and publisher, first in Wisconsin and later in Chicago. A lifelong Democrat, Calkins was described in his Chicago Chronicle obituary as "a valiant soldier and a leading citizen..a pioneer journalist and a brilliant, farseeing political economist."

Philo White [1796-1883 was a politician and newspaperman. After publishing the Western Carolinian [1820-1830] and the Raleigh Standard [1834-1836], he helped to establish and edited the Milwaukee Sentinel.
