"Haji Aqa" is a satirical novella by Persian author Sadeq Hedayat here translated from Persian into German by Werner Sundermann. The novella is a portrait of an ambitious, ill-educated, falsely pious, unscrupulous and self-important merchant, which was first published in the journal Sokan in 1945. Hedayat's most popular work, it was initially dismissed by critics and the literary establishment as an inartistic caricature, but in post-revolutionary Iran it appealed to a new generation of readers owing to the rise in status of the traditional merchant class. It was translated into English and French as well as German. Good .
