Second edition.
Hare writes in his Preface: "The Gurneys of Earlham were a Quaker family, who--through their personal qualities and their self-devotion--played a more conspicuous part than any other set of brothers and sisters in the religious and philanthropic life of England during the first half of the nineteenth century." He remarks that while some members of the family such as Samuel Gurney, John Joseph Gurney, Elizabeth Fry and their brother-in-law Thomas Fowell Buxton, were already more or less familiar, this is the first study of "the united family".
