English theologian Thomas Percy (1729-1811) compiled this selection of ballads & poems, some dating to pre-Chaucerian times. The ballads were very popular with British school children. In two Everyman's Library volumes, Entries 148 & 149 in Everyman's Library Poetry series, edited by Ernest Rhys (who has supplied a brief editorial note) and glossary at rear of vol. 2. --- In flatback binding style 1, full ribbed olive cloth-covered boards with elaborate Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front cover, brown topstain and fancy Knowles woodcut art at title page, endpapers & frontis. Volumes lack the dust jackets. --- With prior owners' penciled signatures to front free endpapers and slight soiling to cloth, else a tightly-bound, clean set.; 16mo - 6 to 7 in. tall; xii, 358, x, 440 pages. Very Good+ with no dust jacket .
