The diary was begun in 1660 and has been described as Britain's most celebrated diary, offering a firsthand account of various wars, fire, plague and other events of the decade from 1660-1670. This edition deciphered by the Rev. J. Smith, with notes by Richard Lord Braybrooke and with a brief introduction by Richard Garnett. Indexed in vol. II. Entries 53 & 54 in Everyman's Library Biography series, edited by Ernest Rhys. --- Vol. I: 1914 issuance of the 1906 edition; vol. II undated, but likely the 1906 edition. In flatback binding style 1, full grey cloth-covered boards with elaborate Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front covers, dark topstain and fancy Knowles woodcut art at title pages, endpapers & frontis. Volumes lack the dust jackets. --- With somewhat mis-matched cloth, and with slightly darkened spine and prior owner's bookplate affixed to front paste-down of vol. I. Vol. II with a repaired front hinge, a small tear to cloth at upper front joint and prior owner's signature to p.1; else a clean, tightly-bound copy.; 16mo (6 to 7 in. tall); ix, 666, 719 pages. Good with no dust jacket .
