Charles Egbert Craddock was the pen name of Mary Noailles Murfree who was an American fiction writer of novels and short stories. She was born at 'Grantlands,' whose site is now marked by a large pine tree, Jan. 24, 1850. Educated at the Nashville Female Academy, later in Philadelphia, her first work was published in 1874, her last posthumously in 1930." Much of what she knew of mountain scenery, speech, and manners apparently came from those summers at Beersheba (her family home in the Cumberland mountians), though she also visited Montvale Springs, south of Maryville, TN and ventured into the Smoky Mountains as far as Gregory's Bald. Murfree published many more books, twenty-five in all, most of them about the mountains, but some focusing on Tennessee history and on the Cherokee Indians. Some of her later fiction was set in Mississippi. She died in Murfreesboro, July 31, 1922. (Wikipedia); Riverside Press Edition; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall. Very Good with No dust jacket as issued .
