Edwards, George Thornton was born on May 6, 1868 in Annapolis, Maryland, United States. Son of Thomas and Mary J. (Peirce) Edwards. He set several of Longfellow’s poems to music, including “The Rainy Day,” “My Lost Youth,” etc. “My Heart’s in Tipperary Where the River Shannon Flows” and the “Soldier’s Parting Song,” sung by soldiers in Europe before United States entered the war, the latter having been translated into French, Italian and German.
