FIRST EDITION. 4to, 246 x 170 mms., pp. [xl], 521 [522 - 539 indexes, 540 - 541 Privilege, 542 blank], including engraved and printed title-pages, with engraved vignette on printed title-page, 67 engraved vignettes for each of the sonnets, and 57 engraved vignettes for the "Devises Adoptés," full-page engraved plate [page 382], by Lalouette for with the arms of the Duchess of Aiguillon, to whom the work is dedicated, engraved head- and tail-pieces, contemporary mottled calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments, dark olive morocco label (rubbed and chipped) top and base of spine chipped, corners worn, front joint cracked (but firm), spine darkened and a bit rubbed. Paris, Jacques Le Gras, 1663, in-12 de (111)-306 pp.(3) pp. blanches - (2)-251-(15) pp. rel. début XIXe, demi-maroquin rouge, dos lisse orné d'étoiles, roulettes et double-filets dorés, la première figure a été mise en couleur à la sanguine avec un léger transfert sur la page de texte qui lui fait face, sinon bon ex. 4e édition revue et corrigée de cet ouvrage qui a paru pour la première fois en 1647, il est illustrée d'un titre-frontispice, et de 20 figures d'inspiration baroque gravées hors-texte. Le père jésuite Pierre Le Moyne (1602-1672), décrit ici vingt personalités féminines, qui furent autant de figures héroïques de l'histoire juive, romaine et chrétienne.

Duodecimo tan leather on 5 raised bands gilt ruled to spine & covers as well as fore-edges (top cover held by cords only/tips rubbed) All Edges Rouged, [12]pp prelims + 224pp. Ownership (Biggs) on page after Title, and p1 of text has offsetting from print formerly laid in front of it. Titlepage has 2 wiped inkmarks and somewhat browned as are all prelims, but text pages are clear until last 5 leaves which have some browning. *This 1695 printing seems to be only one in English, it is scarce as only one copy in American Books Prices Current and no others currently for sale. It deales with the merits of History and Historians, truth is essential and faults must be avoided as narrative needs order and style.
