Gerard de Lairesse, il cui Schildebook raggiunse un larghissima diffusione.[most important in their effects were the low countries the region which developed an art absolutely unique of its kind which opened the way and prepared for the work of modern artists. [it was] Gerard de Lairesse [from that school] whose painting book attained a large circulation. This is the earliest recorded set, a mixed one. at Cambridge includes A part I in the Second edition and a Part II in the third edition, but it is not collated and may not be complete. Two copies of the fourth edition are recorded, at the College of William & Mary and at the Universitry of Amsterdam ESTC N39617, without collation, [The copy at William and Mary has 21 plates and 25 plates in the two parts] but the two copies at COPAC of the Fifth edition have respectively 47 and 32 plates. No copies of the First edition are known. Thus , this is a unique survival of the complete third edition of this great drawing manual preceded only by a copy made up of mixed parts. One of the earliest and most thorough drawing methods printed in English, and a translation from the great baroque manual. The 8 text plates also include etched examples. Original marbled boards, black Mro. Gilt, title label, paper spine renewed, one plate with a few marginal stains, but a Very Good copy..
