Title: Uniform Scale Continental Object Lessons. Europe
Description: Springfield, MA, Milton Bradley Co. 1886. Two-faced, dissected map puzzle in the original wooden box, n. d. (ca 1886); box - 12 x 10 x 1, with a chromolithographed label; finished puzzle - 12 x 9 - with chromolithographed illustrations over 38 wooden pieces; large, engraved information sheet and map affixed to verso of top half of the box; box with mild wear and scratches; closed split to upper margin of paper label; puzzle pieces generally very good to near fine. A rare and beautiful educational puzzle for kindergarteners and grade-schoolers, it was created by one of the earliest advocates of Friedrich Frobel's concept of Kindergarten - Milton Bradley - and was described in an 1886 book published by his company ("The Kindergarten and the School"). There were to be five different puzzles released - of Africa, South and North America, Asia, and Europe - and the novel idea behind these series of dissected maps was that they would be drawn to one uniform scale. According toMilton Bradley, previously-released puzzle maps of other companies were not properly scaled and a child would have had a "good reason to suppose that Europe was nearly as large as Africa." A valuable feature of the puzzle was its verso with original design - corresponding to and depicting the principal animal and vegetable production of each country on the recto. The puzzles were intentionally released as stand-alone games, in order to allow to "be bought separately if so desired for home use," but for school purposes the entire series was recommended, just so the full benefit of the system would be realized. Very good .
