Title: Gruppa Iakutskago Protesta, 18 Feb. - 7 Mar. , 1904 (Yakutsk Protest Group)
Description: S. l. Izdanie Bunda, 1904. Real photo postcard; 3 1/2 x 5 1/2; subtitled below image; a few small creases and several nicks to corners; minor spotting; in about very good condition. A photographic postcard, showing the members of the Yakutsk Protest, most of them Russian Jews, which lasted from February 18th through March 7th of 1904. Fifty-six men and women were depicted, with their last names listed below the picture. The protest was an armed rebellion by political exiles (so called Romanovites) in Yakutsk. It would be the biggest and best-known collective political action of exiles in the city and would be triggered by a circular by the Irkutsk Governor-General, which ordered the punishment of exiles for unauthorized absence and for communicating with other exiles. The rebels ultimately surrendered and were sentenced to 12 years of hard labor - a harsh punishment, which would spark nationwide demonstrations and would lead to the prisoners' release in 1905. Very good .
