Author: Domestic" Sewing Machine Title: The Sliding Number Puzzle. The Gem Puzzle. Solitaire Game of Fifteen
Description: (San Francisco), Bruce's Print, 1885. Puzzle in original box, n. d. (ca 1885); box - 3 x 3 x 1/2 - with engraved label laid-on; sixteen, wooden, beveled pieces with numbers and words (the latter forming a sentence when in order); box with a bit of wear to edges and a few spots of foxing to label; one of the wooden pieces with a small puncture to top; overall in very good condition. An amusing advertising for the "Domestic" sewing machine and a delightful piece of San Francisco history, the puzzle was intended to be put together with 15 pieces, but the box contained 16 - most probably in order to be able to fit the advertising slogan: "If you want something simple buy the light running "Domestic" sewing machine office 29 Post St. S. F." The goal of the game was to put the 15 pieces in the box in 3 rows of 4 and 1 row of 3, but out of order, and move them around, utilizing the one empty spot and not lifting them, till in regular order from 1 to 15. Very good .
