Title: Sutler Voucher
Description: S. l. W. H. Moore, Print, 1860. First Edition. Sutler voucher, (1860s); 2 1/2 x 5 1/2; off-white stock, printed and ruled in black; unissued; light age-toning to margins; very good to near fine condition. A sutler, also called virtualer, was a civillian merchant, who sold provisions to soldiers, either in the field, or in quarters - from the back of a wagon, or in a temporary tent. The sutler could extend credit, up to half of the soldier's monthly salary, thus insuring that the latter would not be broke before the end of the month. The current voucher addressed the Paymaster of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery, for value received, to be paid to A. H. Daniels, Sutler. Very good .
