Description: S. l. s. n. A set of 27 beveled, wooden tiles - the capital letters of the alphabet + ampersand - in a period, wooden, decorated box, n. d. (19th century); tiles - 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/8; box with sliding top - 3 x 4 3/4 x 1/2; letters stamped in ink; top of the box decorated with a hand-painted heart and ABC; a bit of wear and chipping to box; one of the tiles appear to have been re-stamped at a later date; overall in very good condition. A beautiful and popular educational toy in the 19th century, such a set would be used to teach young children the alphabet, spelling, and simple sentense-forming. Very good .
