Signed and inscribed by the author to Senator Rufus Choate on the title page. Choate's ownership signature and address in his hand to front wrap. William Cabell Rives (1793 - 1868) was a Virginia lawyer, diplomat, and politician - initially, as a Jacksonian Democrat and later, as a Whig. He was also a Minister to France and during the Civil War - a Delegate to the Provisional Confederate Congress. Rufus Choate (1799 - 1859) was an orator, lawyer, Attorney General of Massachusetts, and a Senator from the Whig Party. Very good .
