Title: An Archive of Items, Related to Gold Mining in Colorado and to Some of the State's Prominent Citizens
Description: Cripple Creek, Colorado Springs, etc. Various, 1871. Manuscript letters, photographs, merger proxy statements, ore receipts, accounts receivable checks, leases, etc. - 100+ items, of which about 30 are receipts and checks, 1871 - 1940s; various formats - handwritten, typed, printed, partially filled in manuscript; occasional spotting, small nicks and cuts, mostly minor wear - overall in very good or better condition. Largely centered around Cripple Creek, Colorado Springs, and Denver - it is an interesting, all-encompasing collection of documents and consists of two parts, somewhat interconnected, as the personal and business papers of some of the people are also related to gold and prospecting. Of the mining history part, some of the more interesting items include 29 photographs of Cripple Creek and Colorado Springs - the latter in miniature format and subtitled in negative (all affixed to two loose photo album leaves); a Mary McKinney Mining Company merger proxy statement; a Doctor Jackpot Mining Company report to shareholders; a lease for office space for Carlton, Woods, and Shove; a Brodie Gold Reduction Company ore receipt; a Bank of Victor certificate of deposit; etc. Of the personal papers - there are several letters to civic leader, Civil War-veteran, and instrumental figure in the development of Denver Jacob Downing (1830 - 1907); a letter by Bishop of Missionary District of Colorado and co-founder of present-day Colorado School of Mines George Maxwell Randall (1810 - 1873), written just a few months before his death; a number of letters to one Mrs. Gray - possibly related to Margaret Gray-Evans (1830 - 1906) - wife of Territorial Governor John Evans; and others. Very good .
