Title: A Collection of Botanical Watercolors
Description: New York and New Jersey, By the artist, 1895. Twenty-five watercolors on loose sheets, ca 1895 (one dated to verso); sizes vary slightly, but approximately 11 3/4 x 9 1/2; text in manuscript, ineraltwo distinctive hands, to both recto and verso; later, three-punch-holes to left or top margins, with a few affecting the very top edge of illustrations; generally in very good to near fine condition, with mild wear and age-toning to edges (one with a crease to top edge) and small scattered spots to verso. A stunning group of botanical watercolors by an anonymous, yet supremely skilled artist, they were created in New York and New Jersey at the end of the 19th century. Most were identified with both their scientific and common names below the illustrations. The rectos also listed the state, town, month, and in some cases - place - the plant was observed at and painted. Examples included White Fringed Orchid (Platanthera blephariglottis), Lady Slipper Orchid (Cypripedium spectabile), Milk Pea (Coronilla Varia), etc. Very good .
