Title: Gilbert Charles Stuart
Description: New York, James Herring, 1833. First Edition. Engraving in a paper frame; sheet 8 1/2 x 5 3/4, with frame 10 1/2 x 7 3/4; subtitle and facsimile signature below portrait; very minor age-toning to margins and tiny, barely-visible pin holes to corners; in very good or better condition. Created after a portrait by famed miniaturist painter Sarah Goodrich, nee Goodridge (1788 - 1853), the engraving depicted Rhode Island Colony artist Gilbert Charles Stuart (1755 - 1828), who would be considered one of America's top portraitists. The creator, Asher Brown Durand (1796 - 1886) of the Hudson River School, would gain tremendous recognition as one of the country's finest engravers after engraving the Declaration of Independence for John Trumbull in 1823. He would largely switch from engraving to oil painting in the 1830s. Very good .
