Title: The Puritan
Description: Pall Mall (London), Moon, Boys & Graves, 1833. First Edition. Engraving with etching; 13 1/4 x 11; two small, repaired cuts to left margin; spotting to left half, mostly visible on verso and not affecting illustration; overall in very good condition. Created by British artist Edward Prentis (1797 - 1854) and engraved by portrait painter and stipple and mezzotint engraver Henry Hoppner Meyer (1780 - 1847), this broadside was based on a painting by Samuel Middiman, which depicted "The Melancholy Jaques" from "As You Like It" and was originally created for John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery - to coinside with the publication of a new illustrated edition of the Bard's plays. The text in plate read: "To Banbury came I. O profane one! / Where I saw a Puritane - one / Hanging of his cat on Monday / For killing of a Mouse on Sunday. / Vide Drunken Barnaby's Tour." Two copies recorded, at the MET and the Wellcome Library; none other in the trade. Very good .
