Born in a noble family, Avalov would serve as Advisor to the Russian Ministry of Trade and as a Senator in the Provisional Government after the February Revolution of 1917. After the Red Army's invasion of Georgia, he fled to Germany, where he taught at the University of Munich and authored numerous works on Georgia and the Caucasus' history, international law, and Georgian literature.
