An authoritative, first-hand account of the establishment of an independent regime in Georgia in 1918, its struggle for recognition, and its relations with its neighbors, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the German High Command, the book has been translated and reprinted numerous times and was written by Georgian historian, jurist, and diplomat Zurab Avalishvili, known in Russian as Zurab Avalov (1876 - 1944). Born in a noble family, Avalov would serve as Advisor to the Russian Ministry of Trade and as a Senator in the Provisional Government after the February Revolution of 1917. After the Red Army's invasion of Georgia, he fled to Germany, where he taught at the University of Munich and authored numerous works on Georgia and the Caucasus' history, international law, and Georgian literature.
