First edition, stand-alone volume, part 2; 9 1/2 x 8; pp. [1], 2-25, [1]; stapled, light-brown wraps, printed and ruled in black; mimeographed text; paper along spine with a closed cut; fore-edge of wraps extremely fragile, with several chips; previous owner's signature and date to front wrap; in good condition. Stepan Baran (1879 - 1953) was a political activist, journalist, lawyer, and author. He was a co-founder of the West Ukrainian People's Republic and Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian National Democratic Party. Baran left Ukraine for Germany in 1944 and was Prime Minister of the Government of the Ukrainian People's Republic in exile in 1952 - 1953. He authored numerous books - most of them historical studies. Published in a DP camp in Germany and part of a series, each volume written by a different author, his current work was published on the 350th anniversary of the 1596 Union of Brest-Litovsk, which would ultimately contribute to the Khmelnytsky Uprising in Ukraine.
