Title: The Owner of This Card Has Purchased One (Brick) in the People's Church...
Description: Boston, By the author, 1880. Printed card, n. d. (ca 1880); 2 3/4 x 4 1/2; off-white card stock, printed in black and illustrated with an engraving on recto only; a few light spots to left side; thin, closed cut to lower left margin; overall in very good condition. Supporting an ambitious fundraising program, the card and the effort were designed by Rev. John William Hamilton (1845 - 1934) - founding father of the People's Church in Boston, which he served from 1875 until 1884 and managed to develop into the largest Methodist congregation in Boston. He would be remembered for opening it to everyone, regardless of social status and race. Built on the corner of Columbus Avenue and Berkeley Street, the construction of the three connected buildings - Church, Parsonage, Chapel (briefly described on the card, followed by the statement: "No expensive tower or costly ornaments, and the Church will be free") took 7 years. "The corner-stone of the chapel and parsonage was laid May 27, 1877.. The corner-stone of the church-building itself was not laid until July 3, 1882, and the building was not opened for worship until Sunday, February 10, 1884." (Crawford, G. A.The Centennial of New England Methodism. Crawford Brothers, 1891.) . Very good .
