Title: A Fortune-Telling Letter to a Victorian Gentleman
Description: S. l. s. n. Printed letter, n. d. (second half of the 19th century); 8 1/2 x 5 1/2; single leaf, text to recto only; old fold lines, else very minor wear; in very good or better condition. Also incuded is a small envelope with a manuscript note to front panel. An unusual mystery of a letter, in a flowing, flowery font, it clearly addressed a gentleman, most probably American, rather than a lady. While the fortune-telling craze was sweeping Europe and the United States, fortunes were more often divinated through Tarot cards, astrological charts, crystal balls, dripping wax, and many more, and the customers were almost exclusively females. The current letter read, in part: "You are modest and brave, and you will overcome all disturbances, which you often meet in your life..You will be advised by somebody else too, but before you follow, consider well..because he wants to confound you..You will marry a very beautiful and rich lady, and your marriage will be a happy one." The small envelope, presumably the one, which held the folded paper, contained a four-line, manuscript note - faded and barely-legible - reading: "You will be well rewarded, by the choice you make.." . Very good .
