Title: A Small Collection of Documents, Related to the Arrest and Confinement of a Mississippi Man, Who Had Been Adjudged Insane
Description: Leflore County, MS, By the authors, 1903. Four documents, one manuscript and three printed and partially filled by hand, regarding one Nash Edwards, who was to be arrested and confined to the State Lunatic Aslylum, or to jail. It seemed a quick justice had been dealt, as it appeared the whole process had taken just a day and all of the papers were dated June 5, 1903. - Writ de Lunatico Inquirendo - 6 3/4 x 8; printed and partially filled in manuscript; light crease lines; in very good cnndition. The document, by the Chancery Court and addressed to Sheriff J. L. Haley of Leflore County, stipulated that a citizen of that county, Nash Edwards, was insane and that his friends permitted him to go at large, neglecting to place him in the State Lunatic Asylum. It also commanded the Sheriff to summon the alleged lunatic and six jurors, who were to deliberate and pronounce a judgement on the insanity. A typed note on verso explained that the Sheriff had done, as instructed. - Manuscript document - 14 x 8 1/2; lined paper; small punctures to upper left corner from a removed pin; several crease lines; in very good condition. The jury, summoned by Sheriff Haley, pronounced that Edwards was indeed insane and dangerous to the community and that the the jurors recommended he be placed at the asylum in Jackson, Mississippi for safe keeping. - Writ of Arrest - 6 3/4 x 8; printed and partially filled in manuscript; light crease lines; in very good cnndition. Following the previous two papers, the document commanded the sheriff to arrest Nash Edwards and place him in the asylum, if there be vacancy and if not, to confine him in jail until room can be had. Once again, A typed note on verso explained that the Sheriff had arrested and jailed Edwards. - Typed bill, on Sherif Haley's letterhead; 5 x 8 1/2; penciled-in manuscript notes; horizontal crease line; very good or better condition. The final of the four, the document specified the expenses incurred in the State vs Nash Edwards case, including Arrest ($1.50), Empanneling jury ($0.20), etc. Very good .
