Title: [Metamorphic Trade Card] the Reformed Burglar in Four Chapters
Description: Five Points, NY, Donaldson Borthers, 1880. Metamorphic trade card, n. d. (ca 1880); 3 x 5; engraved illustrations and text on both recto and verso; two very small rubbed spots in right corners of verso; light wear to edges; a small nick to right margin; overall in very good condition. Advertising the Sapolio soap, it would be described by Time magazine as "probably the world's best-advertised product." Author Bret Harte was known for writing jingles for the brand. First manufactured in 1869 and enjoying remarcable success for decades, it would be overtaken by competitors and would be discontinued before WWII. The recto of the card told the story, in rhyme, of a burglar, who resolved to never steal again, after seeing his own reflection in the Sapolio-shined floor and deciding he was looking at a ghost. The verso described the items Sapolio would clean and polish. Very good .
