Title: Counting-House Calendar
Description: S. l. (possibly New York), By the author, 1843. Thin, lacquered wood block with a decorative red border; 4 1/4 x 2 3/4 x 1/4; dovetail groove with a movable arm, to account for the days of the week; text in manuscript in blue ink on both recto and verso; small rubbed and worn spots to edges; in very good condition. A delightful manuscript perpetual calendar and an unusual piece of American financial history, it was, presumably, created in the first half of the 19th century by a clerk at a counting house (in the 1800s, traditionally, an office where the finances of a business were kept). Meticulously calculated, it covered dates from 1599 to 1899. Although the maker only dated and signed his name A. Craig with no place mentioned, the calendar might have been made in New York (provenance: previous owner). Very good .
