Oleksa Voropai (1913 - 1989), sometimes writing under the pen name Oleksa Stepovyi, was a Ukrainian author, ethnographer, and naturalist. AN agronomist by education, he worked in the Vinnytsia Oblast in 1922-33, where he witnessed the Holodomor Famine, which he would later write about in his memoir "The Ninth Circle." During and after WWII, he spent time in DP camps in Germany and studied ethnography and folklore. He moved to England in 1948, where he taught at the UFU and the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences and wrote numerous memoirs, as well as works on ethnography and folklore, including the current compilation of Ukrainian folk proverbs.
