Title: Mur: Literatura, Mystetstvo, Krytyka. Almanakh, No. 1 (Mur: Literature, Art, Criticism. Almanac, No. 1)
Description: S. l. (Stuttgart), Prometei, 1946. First edition, issue no. 1 (all published); 8 1/4 x 5 3/4; pp. [2], 5-187, [5]; off-white wraps, printed with an intricate vignette in dark-purple; small nicks to tips of spine; corners of front wrap with small loss of paper; in very good condition. The only issue ever published of the Artistic Ukrainian Movement's only almanac. An ambitious, albeit short-lived artistic-literary organization of Ukrainian emigres in Europe, MUR (Mystetskyi ukrainskyi rukh) was founded in September of 1945 in Furth, Germany, with the main objective of uniting Ukrainian artists and authors, who had been scattered across Europe after WWII, and providing them with a platform for creative dialogues in various art- and literary- styles. Some of its founding committee's members included author, poet, and leader of the Ukrainian Revolutionary Democratic party (URDP) Ivan Bahriany (1906 - 1963), ethnographer, author, and archeologist Viktor Petrov (pseud. V. Domontovych) (1894 - 1969), dramatist and poet Iurii Kosach (1908 - 1990), and others. The Head of the organization was author and journalist Ulas Samchuk (1905 - 1987). Despite putting together several successful writers' congresses and conferences, they could not manage to establish their own publishing house or a permanent journal. When Ulas Samchuk emigrated to Canada in 1948, the organization ceased to exist. Very good .
